Tennessee in Winter: Whiskey, Fog, and the Walking Dead

Sometimes you don't need six weeks and three national parks. Sometimes one week in Tennessee is enough — a bottle of Ole Smoky, a friend waiting, and the realization that the best trips are often the smallest ones.

We land in Atlanta and head straight out — with a mandatory stop at Buc-ee's, the most American of all American phenomena: a rest stop the size of a supermarket, beef jerky in fifteen variations, signs that crack jokes, coffee that never runs out. You have to go there to understand why the USA sometimes just wins.

Chattanooga sits there like a city that knows it's beautiful but doesn't brag about it. We explore Battle Mountain, wander through town, find good corners. And then the TWD filming locations — sets from The Walking Dead that feel only marginally less post-apocalyptic without the zombies. That's the beautiful thing about film locations: the place remains, and the story sticks to it.

We pick up Robin in the evening. Friends you meet at travel destinations turn vacations into something else. Something warmer.

The Smoky Mountains in February: fog lies in the valleys like cotton wool. The trees are bare and somehow beautiful in a way you never see in summer. We stop at the Ole Smoky Distillery — moonshine from the original recipe, tasted in small glasses, with the mild awareness that the rental car is still running and we have a few more hairpin turns ahead.

Back in Chattanooga: Bass Pro Shops — America's temple of the outdoors, with a carp pond in the middle, stuffed elk above the shelves, and the honest feeling of having shopped in a different country. Check out the Columbia store. Wander. Let things unfold.

On the last morning we pack slowly. Tennessee hasn't changed us — but it reminded us that you sometimes don't have to go far to get away.
